My Story
FROM DEBILITATING FATIGUE to RENEWED VIGOR FOR LIFE
-
So How Did I Get Here?
Having initially turned to Yoga and Pilates at the end of the 1990’s to de-stress, relax and experience safe, gentle movement (whilst working in a stressful professional environment myself), I was inspired to re-train as a Yoga and Pilates teacher to help others in a similar way.
However, 15 or so years in to my teaching career, the debilitating fatigue I experienced left me unable to enjoy practising the stronger yoga postures and Pilates exercises I had enjoyed previously.
This stemmed from the combined effects of being a busy, roving instructor, excessive sitting during a yoga teacher’s “behind the scenes” tasks, perimenopause, prescribed and alternative remedies that were ineffective and unsympathetic medics.
At exactly the right time, I discovered slow, mindful yoga which focuses on how the posture (asana) feels (rather than how it looks!) (as well as meditation, breathing practices (pranayama) and Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation) ). I found moving away from stronger movement transformational - it enabled me to keep moving. Once again (and as during my pre-fatigue years) I had enough energy for a meaningful and useful personal yoga practice and to share this new approach in a number of weekly classes whilst retaining sufficient energy for everyday life and other interests.
MY APPROACH TO YOGA
I knew that I wasn’t the only yoga teacher or enthusiast lacking in energy or enthusiasm for stronger postures (which no longer soothed my nervous system as effectively as gentler movements). At just the right time, I discovered the slow, mindful approach of Kristine Weber with whom I continue to study regularly. We do of course, need exercise and fitness too!
So I offer hybrid classes which include Pilates (exercise) followed by slow, mindful, nervous system based yoga; in addition to slow, mindful yoga classes (with mat and standing postures) including Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation), meditation and breath-work; chair-based yoga (with optional standing postures) and workshops and courses in yoga for improved sleep.
I NOW OFFER THIS ‘BUFFET’ OF PRACTICES TO HELP OTHERS FIND EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED FROM THEIR OWN SELF-CARE REGIME
